Darkness on the Edge of Town mereceu o ano passado uma espantosa edição numa caixa de luxo onde finalmente se explorou até ao limite o contexto da criação desta obra-charneira de Bruce Springsteen.
Além dos dois discos de extras que reuniram finalmente todo o manancial de material criado por Bruce para suceder a Born To Run , incluía-se também três DVDs com gravações de atuações e, mais importante talvez, um documentário assinado por Thom Zimny de título The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town .
É esse mesmo documentário, já premiado, que recebe agora uma edição própria, com um par de extras: uma entrevista com o Boss e algumas atuações ao vivo. Mas é o documentário de Zimny que deve concentrar a nossa atenção.
O tumultuoso caminho que conduziu Bruce Springsteen a Darkness on the Edge of Town é explorado com toda a minúcia neste filme: a rutura com Mike Appel, antigo manager cuja ligação contratual ao cantor obrigou à pausa editorial após o inesperado e avassalador sucesso de Born to Run , mas sobretudo o caudal criativo de Bruce que, mais do que qualquer outra coisa, parecia interessado em encontrar o seu lugar como artista de sucesso numa América que parecia querer abraçá-lo.
Bruce lidou com o sucesso de Born to Run recusando-se a ser reduzido a uma mera pop star. E nas sessões de estúdio com a E Street Band procurou um fio condutor entre as muitas dezenas de canções até chegar à depuração de Darkness tocada, por um lado, pela raiva punk e, por outro, pelo lado de storytelling do country clássico.
Visionar este documentário é viajar no tempo, encontrar um lugar no sofá do estúdio onde Bruce levou os seus músicos até ao limite na procura de uma singular obra-prima. A fotografia, o lado confessional de Bruce, a observação privilegiada das sessões, os testemunhos (de Mike Appel a Patti Smith, que nos conta como o seu amor por Fred Sonic Smith informou a sua abordagem a "Because the Night") e o processo criativo são algumas das passagens deste excelente e revelador documentário de noventa minutos.

Uma das histórias que Bruce Springsteen mais gosta de contar nos seus concertos de três horas é a da tentativa de entrar na mansão de Elvis Presley em Graceland, às três horas da madrugada, durante uma digressão americana em 1976. O Boss e o seu guitarrista da E Street Band, Steve Van Zandt, quando se aproximavam do grande portão para tocar na campaínha, foram interceptados pelos seguranças que se mostraram inflexíveis perante as explicações de Springsteen de que era já uma estrela rock reconhecida que tinha sido capa pouco tempo antes nas revistas Time e Newsweek. Elvis Presley nem sequer estava na residência, de onde se viam algumas luzes. Se olharmos com precisão para a capa do álbum "Born to Run" (onde consta o recém-falecido saxofonista Clarence Clemons), gravado um ano antes, Bruce Springsteen tinha um crachá de Elvis Presley na correia da guitarra. O Rei do Rock faleceria um ano depois daquela aventura de Springsteen em Graceland.

Em 1976 Bruce continuava uma batalha jurídica com Mike Appel que o impedia de gravar, por essa razão ofereceu parte da musica "Because The Night" à cantora Patti Smith, este foi o unico e maior êxito da sua carreira.
Bruce tinha a musica quase completa e Patti completou-a, pensou em inclui~la nos albuns "The River" e "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" mas por não encaixar bem só em 1986 é que esta musica versão ao vivo é que saiu na caixa "Live 1975-1985".

Aos 27 anos, Bruce Springsteen arrisca tudo. Depois de uma contenda com o manager que o impedia de pôr os pés num estúdio, rejeita a cama de sucesso que tem à sua frente e foge a refugiar-se no passado e na vida das pequenas cidades americanas. "Darkness on the Edge of Town", de 1978, não é punk em som, mas é-o em espírito. A reedição acentua o peso histórico de um disco soberbo

"Alugar 'Badlands'". A frase até parece estar em relevo, saltando à vista de imediato da amarelada (mas não carcomida) folha de trabalho. Bruce Springsteen deve ser um rapaz muito arrumadinho, para o caderno de apontamentos de há mais de 20 anos, em que ia anotando pistas para aquele que viria a ser um dos discos mais importantes da sua carreira não ter morrido num qualquer sótão. Mas voltemos àquela curta nota: antes de se lembrar a si mesmo de completar alguns temas ou experimentar novos arranjos para as músicas que o ocupavam, ver urgentemente o filme de Terrence Malick sobre um jovem casal que repentinamente se dedicava ao crime e se fechava ao mundo. Era um mergulho físico, para se cobrir de pó e de mazelas nos costados, na verdadeira paisagem americana. Longe de pontes sobre Brooklyn, florestas de betão, estátuas com tochas ou passadeiras vermelhas. Depois de uma extraordinariamente bem-sucedida digressão de "Born to Run", que dele tinha feito uma estrela rock, Springsteen desembolsou 2000 notas de dólar, comprou um Ford e seguiu com o guitarrista Steve Van Zandt numa viagem pelo sul do país.

No espelho retrovisor, sabia que queria ver o tom épico de "Born to Run". O medo de acordar com as roupas do sucesso metia-lhe medo e, no meio de uma acesa disputa de três anos com o manager Mike Appel sobre o controlo artístico, sentiu o chamamento súbito de se ligar novamente aos pais e à realidade do país, habitualmente varrida para debaixo do tapete, longe dos olhares fugazes de quem parava nas pequenas cidades apenas de passagem, sem vencer a desconfiança local. Era um grito em esforço por genuinidade, rouco de tanta intensidade, em que o cinema de Malick era uma referência essencial, a par de Bob Dylan. Depois de ter descoberto em "Highway 61 Revisited" o eco do país a que sentia pertencer na adolescência, Springsteen tomou por ambição chegar a esse mesmo fascinante retrato da América que rompia com as histórias bonitinhas dos hits do Top 40 que lhe feriam os ouvidos.

O apelo foi tão devastador na sua exigência que deitou fora, sem arrependimento, todas as muitas canções "alegres" compostas no período de três anos que mediou o lançamento dos dois álbuns e em que se deu a batalha judicial com Appel. E ficaram apenas as dez que reflectiam por inteiro as suas narrativas de personagens que a vida tratava com um chicote mas a que oferecia sempre esperança suficiente para se levantarem, até ser altura de caírem novamente. Não era uma questão de losers. Era antes a vida castigadora, que mantinha as suas gentes à beira de uma qualquer explosão. Um país nervoso, sangrento, subterrâneo, fora do alcance dos radares da normalidade exigida e ditada por maioria.

Nem açúcar nem adoçantes

Embrenhado nas músicas de Hank Williams e Woody Guthrie - tal como fizera Dylan -, a Springsteen interessava reduzir a cinzas todas as camadas de glamour que o sucesso de "Born to Run" lhe tivesse acrescentado à pele. Era uma reacção de estranheza, de quem usa os punhos para furar e alcançar a vitória, mas a quem os louros desse mesmo feito não servem, sendo mais desconfortáveis do que o soco mais violento que poderia obter em resposta. O Springsteen de "Darkness" é um músico que fez tudo para chegar àquele ponto mas que não consegue unir as pontas: o rapaz de New Jersey que pegara pela primeira vez numa guitarra aos 13 anos estava demasiado distante da figura ovacionada noite após noite. Há, em tudo isto, uma violenta dose de culpa, de traição às origens, que "Darkness" explora exemplarmente. A escuridão que habita cada uma das personagens num ponto de instabilidade, a exigir uma qualquer revolução interior, é um espelho de um Springsteen debatendo-se consigo mesmo num pântano assustador que dá pelo nome de verdade: o homem, o músico, deixara de saber aonde pertencia. E daí o regresso à essência.

A vontade de romper com a imagem errada que "Born to Run" se arriscava a tatuar-lhe na pele conduziu-o a determinações definitivas como a recusa de quaisquer secções de cordas ou sopros (há um saxofone, sim senhor, mas não tem direito a bilhete para acompanhante). "We want coffee black" - café puro, sem açúcares nem adoçantes - era o mandamento nas sessões de gravação. Consciente de que em ano de explosão punk apostar em arranjos grandiloquentes seria quase o mesmo que promover um suicídio em público, Springsteen sabia também que a crueza das personagens que chamara a habitar as suas letras não se compadecia com luxos instrumentais.

Mas a sua certeza em relação ao artista que queria ser aos olhos do público espraiou-se identicamente até à escolha meticulosa da fotografia para a capa do disco: em sua casa, Springsteen queria passar aquele ar solitário, de um charme quase anti-social, do rebelde que a sociedade coloca à margem por ser mais confortável negá-lo do que integrá-lo. Se a isso juntarmos o facto de durante a digressão anterior ter assistido a um visionamento privado de "Mean Streets", que o próprio Martin Scorsese providenciou em Los Angeles, percebe-se o quanto o cinema americano, absolutamente deliciado com esta ideia de margens, influenciou "Darkness".

E depois, há todo o contexto social. Por muito que Springsteen tente puxar o foco para a sua necessidade pessoal de se recentrar - direcção que manteria por mais dois discos notáveis, "The River" e "Nebraska" -, "Darkness" acaba por ser igualmente, mesmo que de forma involuntária, um disco de ressaca do fim da guerra no Vietname, de caminho (a fórmula desemprego + inflação estava já presente) para a recessão durante a presidência de Jimmy Carter, de uma quase desesperança transversal a um país a contas com a melhor forma de lamber as suas feridas sem matar de vez um orgulho nacional que se cria inabalável.

Podia ter sido mineiro

Bruce Springsteen tinha apenas 27 anos quando editou "Darkness on the Edge of Town", numa altura em que se tinha dado início a uma procura desesperada pelo "próximo Bob Dylan" - algo com que hoje ironiza, uma vez que Dylan mal tinha chegado aos 35 anos em 1977. Mas se as ligações com o passado são fáceis de identificar em Dylan e em alguma country que Springsteen andou a colher nos três anos que demorou a montar "Darkness", é curioso aquilo que o disco antecipa em termos de pop/rock: não custa muito a encontrar os Arcade Fire, Nick Cave, Ryan Adams ou os Afghan Whigs na bola de cristal estilística que o álbum proporciona.

A presente reedição, que embala o disco original numa luxuosa apresentação ao melhor género de caderno de apontamentos A4 - reprodução fiel das notas de Springsteen - lança nova luz sobre um disco que, enfiado entre os clássicos populares "Born to Run" e "Born in the USA", e, por outro lado, o culto mais óbvio de "Nebraska", acabou por cair excessivamente na sombra. "Darkness" é um disco monumental, de peito escancarado, de um risco que hoje pode parecer despropositado - por soar quase convencional -, mas que à época garantiu a Bruce um lugar entre os maiores da canção americana. A ausência de cedências perante o conceito que o músico tinha desenhado para o disco, tem agora um espantoso acrescento: "The Promise", álbum duplo com temas que não cabiam nas exigências teóricas de "Darkness", e que fazem perceber que Springsteen não estava a brincar ao falar de uma selecção criteriosa do material incluído no disco original em 1978. De qualidade insuspeita - um dos temas é o "Because the Night" oferecido a Patti Smith -, a diferença está mesmo na desadequação perante o propósito da América oculta e tresmalhada. Será vendido igualmente de forma autónoma, para quem dispensar a edição especial.

A juntar à música, este "Darkness" traz um filme precioso (mais dois concertos) que desvenda as costuras do disco. O documentário, também intitulado "The Promise", passa 88 minutos a levantar questões e a lembrar quem era e o que fez este Springsteen que se tornaria campeão de êxitos radiofónicos e tomado por uma figura mainstream chata - no sentido de plana, não se deixem enganar - quando tem, logo após uma película superficial, uma profundidade capaz de achar petróleo. E "Darkness", sabemo-lo aqui, é a primeira curva na vi(r)agem para o interior do país. Ao querer lembrar-se de onde veio, Bruce confundiu os pais com os tios, New Jersey com o Baton Rouge, o rio Hudson com a aridez do deserto texano. E a sua vida com a dos anónimos Joeys ou Jerrys, Johns ou Toms, gasolineiros ou operários fabris, mineiros ou delinquentes. "Darkness on the Edge of Town" é um disco sobre quem foi Bruce Springsteen até 1978. Mas também sobre quem poderia ter sido, se tivesse nascido numa outra cidade norte-americana, longe das guitarras e em luta com a opressão de um quotidiano com paisagens a perder de vista mas horizontes míopes.1

Joey Ramone pediu a Bruce que lhe escrevesse uma musica para o seu grupo "the Ramones", mas Jon Landau aconcelhou-o a que ficasse com Hungry Heart e foi um bom concelho já que esta viria a ser um dos seus maiores êxitos.

Mais tarde a quando do lançamento do album "Greatest Hits" foi gravado no café Eckstein em Berlim o videoclip, juntamente com a estrela de rock Alemâ Wolfgang Niedecken e a sua banda, contudo apenas a voz ao vivo de Springsteen e do público foi aproveitada acompanhado do som de estudio original de 1980 com a E Street Band.

"Fire" foi escrita para o seu grande idolo Elvis Presley, Bruce enviou um demo da musica em 77 mas pouco tempo depois Elvis faleceu. Nesta fase da vida Springsteen estava impedido de gravar devido ao processo que tinha com o manager Mike Appel mas não parou de escrever grandes musicas. O grupo Pointer Sisters conseguiram um enorme sucesso com "Fire".
Bruce ponderou incluir a musica nos albuns "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" ou "The River" mas decidiu que esta não se enquadrava.

É uma das letras que as pessoas mal interpretaram, quando ouvimos o refrão parece que estamos a ouvir um hino aos EUA onde a personagem se orgulha do seu país, mas na realidade é uma critica à forma como o país tratou os veteranos de guerra que tinham ido para o Vietnam. Springsteen considera esta uma das suas melhores musicas, mas não ficou contente com a interpretação que alguns fizeram da letra. Com a capa onde a bandeira dos EUA era evidenciada é mais fácil pensar que esta musica fala sobre o patriotismo e não sobre a vergonha da guerra do Vietnam.

Esta musica tinha sido gravada numa versão acústica anos antes juntamente com as musicas para o album "Nebraska"mas Bruce decidiu não juntar nesse album.
